Wesen becomes chair of regional air agency
MOUNT VERNON — Skagit County Commissioner Ron Wesen is the new chair of the Northwest Clean Air Agency Board of Directors.
The regional air agency’s seven-member board appoints a new chair each year.
Wesen succeeds Brian Heinrich of the city of Bellingham, according to an air agency news release.
Northwest Clean Air Agency spokesman Seth Preston said Wesen has served on the board since 2010.
“Because of my experience on the (air agency) board, I am better able to explain to our community what steps are taken to monitor air quality in our area,” Wesen said in the release.
The board includes members from each county within the air agency’s jurisdiction — Whatcom, Skagit and Island. It also includes members from the largest city of each county — Bellingham, Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor — and one at-large member.
The air agency enforces federal, state and local air quality regulations in the three-county region.
Northwest Clean Air Agency Executive Director Mark Buford said the chair is appointed by the board, but the agency generally aims to rotate between representatives from each of the three counties.
