SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Jeff Hornacek missed his only free throw attempt Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers, an errant shot that likely ended his run at Calvin Murphy’s NBA single-season free-throw percentage record.
Hornacek needed to make 19 straight by season’s end to beat Murphy’s record of 95.8 percent in 1980-81. The miss dropped Hornacek to 94.8 percent (165-of-174).
``I didn’t get a good push off,″ Hornacek said. ``As soon as it left my hand, I knew it wasn’t going in.″
To pass Murphy now, Hornacek needs to make 42 straight. Although he hit 67 in a row earlier this season, he’s unlikely to get enough attempts before the playoffs.
Hornacek enters Thursday’s game against Phoenix tied with Mark Price of Cleveland in 1992-93 for the third-best effort in league history.
