I-29 closures needed for U.P. bridge replacement
Construction on a Union Pacific Railroad bridge is scheduled to cause some temporary lane closures on Interstate 29 next week.
The bridge is approximately one-half mile north of the Interstate 80/I-29 interchange. Construction crews are scheduled to complete the demolition of the south half of the existing bridge over I-29 on Sunday.
The work will require I-29′s southbound lanes to close from 10:30 p.m. Sunday through 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. The northbound lanes will close Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. and reopen at 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 4.
The I-29 northbound lands will close again at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 4 through 5:30 a.m. Oct. 5. All closures are subject to change if work is delayed.
Reconstruction of the bridge is necessary to allow for increased capacity on I-29, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. The existing rail bridge will be rebuilt from five tracks to three to improve local yard operations.
