Attorney: Jessica Hahn Will Cooperate With Federal Investigation
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) _ Jessica Hahn has been subpoenaed and granted limited immunity to testify before a grand jury about the money she received after a sexual encounter with TV evangelist Jim Bakker, her attorney said Tuesday.
Lawyer Dominic Barbara said the 28-year-old former church secretary from West Babylon was served Sunday with a subpoena to appear Sept. 21 before the grand jury in Charlotte, N.C.
″Jessica Hahn is not a target of the investigation,″ said Barbara, adding that he had met with FBI agents and officials from the federal Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service.
″Jessica will be a witness and will be granted immunity. She will be testifying for the U.S. government,″ he said. ″Jessica clearly considers it her responsibility to cooperate with the government in its investigation.″
Bakker resigned as head of the 500,000-member PTL television ministry in March after saying he had been blackmailed over his 1980 meeting with Miss Hahn in a Florida hotel room.
In a taped description of the meeting, Miss Hahn described being forced into sex with Bakker and another evangelist.
She reached a $265,000 settlement with Bakker, but received only a small amount of the money before Bakker resigned and payments were cut off.
The lawyer said he expects Miss Hahn to be questioned in connection with an investigation into whether the money she received was taken legally from the PTL organization.
Barbara said he expected to ask for a postponement of her grand jury appearance until after her story appears in the November issue of Playboy magazine, which hits the newsstands Sept. 28.
Miss Hahn remains in seclusion with bodyguards in Chicago and California as part of a deal to keep her out of the limelight until the story is published, Barbara said.
Although Barbara has said in the past that there would be no nude pictures of Miss Hahn in the magazine, on Tuesday he said, ″I have no comment as to whether or not there are pictures in the magazine,″ adding, ″She’s not going to be in the centerfold.″
