Review: Diana’s Burgers brings the Chris Madrid’s spirit

January 21, 2019

Note: This is a Just a Taste review, which the Express-News does soon after a restaurant or bar opens to give our first impressions.

Diana’s Burgers isn’t Chris Madrid’s, but you wouldn’t know it from the food or enthusiastic line spilling out the front door onto Zarzamora Street.

There’s good reason for the comparison: Diana’s Burgers is the new project from Diana Madrid, sister of the late Chris Madrid. On paper, the two restaurants aren’t related — the Chris Madrid’s restaurant and branding rights are now property of Paloma Blanca owner Richard Peacock — but the DNA is unmistakable, and we couldn’t be happier about that.

On the menu: Diana’s, like Chris Madrid’s before it, is all about the cheddar. Oodles of golden goodness oozes well beyond the bun on three of Diana’s five offerings.

The Jalapeño Cheddar Burger ($7.25) is king of that cheesy hill, with enough heat to cut through the fatty floe. The Bacon Cheddar Burger ($8) was decidedly salty and indulgent with a generous tangle of bacon strips piled on, but after a bite or two, I was done with that flavor.

Diana’s begins each order with a well-seasoned beef patty, as evidenced in a stripped-down, cheese-free hamburger ($5.75, $6.45 with a slice of American cheese) topped with mustard, lettuce, tomato and onion. That patty is complemented by a bun griddled to a bronze crisp, the two elements demonstrating the same kind of back-to-basics attention to detail that’s made Chris Madrid’s a San Antonio mainstay.

Respectable scratch-made french fries are the only side order ($2.50), and trust me, you’ll want to order them. Beverages include sodas, a few bottled beers, a frozen margarita machine and a very limited bar without a cocktail menu.

And that’s about it, folks. There’s not much to the Diana’s Burgers experience, but what more do you need than honest, well-prepared food at a fair price? Grab yourself a spot in line and enjoy.
