District to close 4 central Wyoming schools next year

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A central Wyoming school district that education officials say is experiencing a decline in enrollment and in funding will close four schools next year.
The Natrona County School District's board of trustees voted on Monday to shutter the doors of Frontier Middle School and University Park, Mountain View and Willard elementary schools. The schools in the Casper area currently have about 740 students.
The closures were proposed in late September for the only public school district in the county that covers 5,376 square miles (14,000 square kilometers).
Board members say the action could save the district $2.5 million a year. The district has already cut more than $4 million in its budget, and it expects to slash at least $8 million more in coming years.
