German Tourists Robbed While Waiting for Police With AM-Tourist Slayings

MIAMI (AP) _ An evening in an upscale neighborhood turned into terror for two German tourists who found their car vandalized, then were robbed while waiting for police.
Hasald Pavel and Franco Scaturro, both from Hamburg, had left a nightclub with a friend at 5:45 a.m. Sunday when they found their car windows had been smashed.
They called police, but while while they were waiting for officers to arrive two men robbed them of about $500, said police Lt. Norflett Harris.
The robbers, one of whom had a gun, fled after Scaturro sprayed one of them with Mace, police said. No one was arrested.
The robbery comes as Florida is struggling to preserve its $31 billion-a- year tourism industry amid the publicity of violent attacks on foreign visitors. Ten foreigners have been slain in Florida during the past year.
But police spokesman Dave Magnusson said Pavel and Scaturro were not targeted because they were tourists.
''All it says about Miami is that there are parts of the city where these things can happen - just like any other city,'' Magnusson said.
