SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) _ Darrell Brinkley hit a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning and Mexico went on to rout Venezuela 9-1 Monday in the Caribbean Series.
The game was tied 1-1 prior to a two-hour rain delay. After play resumed, Mexico scored three runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the ninth.
Mexico, represented by the Culiacan Tomato Growers, moved within a half-game of tournament-leading Puerto Rico, represented by the Arecibo Wolves. Puerto Rico was to play the Dominican Republic's Cibao Eagles in the late game.
Brinkley's two-run single put Mexico ahead 3-1. He then stole second, moved to third on a wild throw from Venezuelan catcher Clemente Alvarez and scored on a single by Guillermo Velazquez.
The first five innings were a pitcher's duel between Mexico's Jorge Palafox and Venezuela's Omar Daal, who plays in the major leagues for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Relievers Felipe Murillo and Jose Juan Lopez held Venezuela to one hit over the final three innings.
