LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Paul Pierce scored 23 points and Raef LaFrentz added 23 and 12 rebounds Thursday night, leading No. 2 Kansas to a 96-83 win over Pepperdine.

Both teams started hot as Kansas (12-1) made 14 of its first 18 shots and Pepperdine (5-4) hit 10 of its first 17.

Kansas built a 53-35 halftime lead, but the Waves _ led by Gerald Brown _ made 10 of 12 shots in the first eight minutes to close within 64-58. Brown scored 14 points in the span while Pierce scored nine of Kansas' 11 points.

But Ryan Robertson scored inside, Billy Thomas hit a 3-pointer on a pass from Nick Bradford, and Bradford hit consecutive shots as the Jayhawks went on a 20-4 run to open an 84-62 lead with 7:10 left.

Brown finished with a season-high 35 points on 14-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range.

Kansas has won 52 straight home games, the longest current winning streak in Division I.

Kansas played without 6-foot-8 forward T.J. Pugh, who is sidelined for about three weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot.

Bradford, making his first career start, scored 10 points and had a career-high seven assists and four rebounds.
