HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) _ A single-engine plane crashed and burned at a rural airport Sunday, killing a woman and her son and injuring two others.

The Cessna 172 crashed at 7:42 p.m. at Hendersonville Airport, in western North Carolina about 35 miles south of Asheville, said Jack Barker, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

Ann Summers, 41, and her son, Robert Timothy Whitaker, 24, both of Saluda, were killed, said a Margaret R. Pardee Hospital spokeswoman who would not give her name. Roger Ward, the 21-year-old pilot, and Josh Hoots, 9, both of Saluda, were listed in fair condition.

Officials could not say whether the plane crashed on takeoff or landing. The accident was under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
