MARIA LANKOWITZ, Austria (AP) _ Defending champion and local favorite Judith Wiesner was a first-round upset victim in the Styrian Open, beaten 4-6, 6-7 by unseeded Czech Lenka Cenkova.

Top-seeded Barbara Paulus kept the day from being a total disaster for Austrian fans by beating Angeles Montolio of Spain 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.

Wiesner, the No. 2 seed, trailed 4-6, 4-3 when her match was suspended because of rain late Tuesday. She took a 5-3 lead when play resumed Wednesday, but Cenkova came and put away the victory.

Austrian Melanie Schnell was also ousted in the first round by Romanian Catarina Cristea, losing 1-6, 6-0, 0-6. Another Austrian, fifth-seeded Sandra Dopfer, did not survive the second round, beaten 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 by Christina Torrens-Valero of Spain.

Argentina's Bettina Fulco-Villella and sixth-seeded Flora Perfetti of Italy went through a marathon three hours, 22 minutes before the South American won 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
