Teens Arrested in Wash. State School Fire
Jun. 01, 2006
CENTRALIA, Wash. (AP) _ Two 14-year-old boys were arrested in connection with a weekend fire that raced through one wing of an elementary school and destroyed 10 classrooms.
The boys told police they were playing with fireworks late Saturday at Oakview Elementary School and threw one into a trash bin, which caught fire and spread to the building.
``It seems like these guys were just there messing around,'' Detective Carl Buster said. ``They had no vendettas against anybody, weren't mad at any of the teachers or anything like that.''
Buster said the teens ran off and didn't realize the extent of the damage until they saw TV news reports the next day. The two were arrested Wednesday.
Classes for 450 students at the school were canceled. District officials said they hope to put some students in the undamaged half of the school on Monday. The rest will be squeezed into another school for the final two weeks of the year.
