TOKYO (AP) _ Jim Tatum's eighth-inning home run gave the Yakult Swallows a 1-0 victory over the Seibu Lions Saturday in the opening game of the Japan Series.
Tatum smacked the first pitch from Lions' starter Fumiya Nishiguchi just over the wall in left field.
Swallows pitcher Kazuhisa Ishii allowed only three hits and tied the Japan Series record with 12 strikeouts.
Ishii pitched out of a jam in the fourth after allowing two hits, putting runners on second and third with none out. He then struck out Domingo Martinez and Makoto Sasaki before getting Jun Yamada to ground out to third.
Nishiguchi also went the distance, striking out seven and walking none.
Game 2 in the best-of-7 series will be Sunday at Seibu Stadium.
