SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — A Texas man has been formally charged with capital murder in the December shooting death of a police officer.

A statement from the Hays County district attorney's office says that Stewart Mettz was indicted by a grand jury Thursday for "intentionally or knowingly" killing San Marcos Officer Kenneth Copeland.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Copeland was fatally shot Dec. 4 while serving a warrant for a domestic violence charge against Mettz at his home.

Capital murder is punishable by death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Mettz is held without bond at Hays County jail. He was also charged earlier with family violence assault and injury to an elderly person on allegations of attacking his wife and mother-in-law.

Online records don't immediately list an attorney for Mettz.
