SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say a high-ranking Mexican drug cartel leader has been arrested in San Diego on narcotics-trafficking and money laundering charges.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego said Friday that Sajid Emilio Quintero Navidad was arrested at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Oct. 11.
Quintero Navidad, also known as El Cadete, was indicted by a federal grand jury in September.
He had been under investigation by the United States for several years. Authorities believe he coordinated the transportation of tons of cocaine from South America through Mexico and into the United States.
Authorities say Quintero Navidad, 36, is the cousin of fugitive Mexican drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.
He is believed to be one of the highest-ranking Mexican cartel leaders arrested in the United States.
