NEW YORK (AP) _ Start spreading the news: The Big Apple is considering paying tribute to Frank Sinatra by making ``New York, New York'' the city's official song.

Council Speaker Peter F. Vallone said Wednesday he would introduce legislation that would make the song the city's own.

``Everytime we hear `New York, New York,' we think of Frank Sinatra,'' Vallone said. ``With this legislation, Sinatra's great voice will be heard by generations of New Yorkers as they listen with pride to their city's anthem.''

Sinatra, who died of a heart attack May 14 at age 82, recorded the song in 1979.
