MOSCOW (AP) _ Three policemen were killed and a fourth was wounded Saturday when gunmen opened fire on a police station in northwestern Russia in an attempt to seize weapons and ammunition.
The three attackers were driven off before they could take anything, Interior Ministry spokesman Igor Vorontsov said.
A police major and two lieutenants were killed in the attack in Vyshny Volochok, 100 miles northwest of Moscow, Vorontsov said. The town is located along a main highway between Russia's two largest cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
According to Vorontsov, police had three suspects, though no arrests had been made. Investigators said they found a car belonging to one of the men nearby with an automatic rifle inside.
