Fire Breaks Out on River Ferry
Nov. 18, 2000
NEW YORK (AP) _ A fire broke out on a Hudson River ferry, forcing the evacuation of all 11 people on board, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The New York Waterways ferry was crossing the river from Weehawken, N.J., to Manhattan when the fire erupted about 7:30 p.m. Friday, said Lt. Junior Grade Reino Ecklord, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard.
The eight passengers and three crew members onboard were taken off the boat, Ecklord said.
Five were treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital and discharged, a nursing supervisor said.
A New York City fireboat extinguished the fire, which appeared to have started in the engine room, Ecklord said.
