NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Odell Hodge scored 19 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots Saturday as Old Dominion beat East Carolina 79-70, snapping the Pirates five-game winning streak.
The victory gives the Monarchs (12-3, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association) sole possession of first place in the CAA. East Carolina, off to its best start in the conference, dropped to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the CAA.
Mark Poag jumpstarted the game with two 3-pointers, and Hodge added another six points in a 17-4 opening run that established the pace of the game. The Monarchs, shooting 56 percent from the field for the half, led 35-23 at the break.
The Pirates never got the lead under double digits until Othello Meadows hit two free throws with 41 seconds left to pull within 74-66.
The Monarchs shot 58 percent from the field for the game, compared to the Pirates' 38 percent. Reggie Bassett scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds for Old Dominion, E.J. Sherod added 15, and Poag 11.
Raphael Edwards had 18, Othello Meadows had 16, and Tim Basham had 14 and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pirates.
It was the Monarchs fifth consecutive victory.
