Police Officer Convicted in Insurance Scam
Apr. 17, 1985
BOSTON (AP) _ A police officer who claimed he was involved in 22 accidents, most while on duty, and collected more than $200,000 in disability insurance benefits, has been convicted of 10 counts of mail fraud.
Joseph F. Anzalone, 42, was convicted Tuesday by jurors in U.S. District Court of defrauding insurance companies by filing numerous claims for the same alleged accident injuries. He was acquitted of four other counts.
Sentencing is scheduled May 17.
Prosecutors said Anzalone collected benefits from many policies over 15 years for accidents, only some of which were genuine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Morris R. Flynn said Anzalone held 53 policies from one company alone.
Anzalone, a member of the Revere Police Department for 17 years, did not testify. His lawyer said he had been victimized by unscrupulous insurance salesmen.
Anzalone's claims listed injuries to various parts of his body in accidents from 1965 to 1980.
He said the last accident, involving a police van in 1980, left him totally disabled, and he has been on disability since then.
