BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Shannon Beach led four double-figure scorers with 21 points as Youngstown St. defeated Western Illinois 82-71 to advance to the Mid-Continent Conference semifinals.

Liz Hauger and Ann Marie Martin each added 19 points as the second-seeded Penguins survived a scare from seventh-seeded W. Illinois.

Michelle Gosa's 19 points led the Westerwinds, which pulled within five points with 1:45 left in the game. But Hauger and Leslie Majewski each hit two free throws to seal the game for Youngstown St.

``We didn't play very well, but it's the mark of a good team when you don't play well and still win,'' said Youngstown St. coach Ed DeGregorio. ``Everyone was herky-jerky and one step behind for most of the game.''

Nicole LaVan added 12 points for W. Illinois.

The Penguins face Buffalo in Friday night's semifinal.
