Man seeking food steals purse from Salem church
Jan. 28, 2014
SALEM, Mass. (AP) — Salem police are looking for a man they say went to a church to ask for food then swiped a purse that belonged to the pastor's wife.
The man entered St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church on Sunday and ran into Joy Morris.
She told the man they didn't have any food, but went upstairs to ask her husband, the Rev. James Morris, for help.
The priest pulled $20 from his wallet, and walked down to give it to the man, but he was already gone.
Minutes later, they noticed the purse was missing. It contained a cellphone, credit and debit cards, a driver's license and $5 in cash.
Police tell The Salem News (http://bit.ly/1bvrDnK ) that while it may have been a petty theft, it is still frustrating.
