Religious Leaders Seek Turkey Aid
Aug. 27, 1999
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Eight religious leaders appealed to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on day for a long-term U.S. role in helping Turkey deal with effects of its devastating earthquake.
Speaking for the group, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, of New York, also asked Americans to pray for the Turks this weekend in churches, mosques and synagogues. ``The American people are known for their spirit of generosity,'' he said. ``We will do our share in support of an afflicted part of humanity _ the Turkish people.''
The rabbi is president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, a group of religious leaders who promote religious freedom around the world.
Schneier thanked Albright for aid the United States already is giving.
