BAYAMON, Puerto Rico (AP) _ De Juan Wheat made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left Friday night as No. 13 Louisville held on to beat American University of Puerto Rico 90-86 at the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Led by Joel Curbelo's school-record 47 points _ the most ever against Louisville _ American kept up with the Cardinals throughout the game. With Louisville leading 87-86 and 1:06 left, American's Miguel Davila missed two free throws.

Alvin Sims turned the ball over, but the Cardinals recovered the ball with less than a minute to go and ran a set play for Wheat, who sank his shot.

American used three guards early on and led 49-42 at halftime. Curbelo scored 20 points in the first half.

Wheat, Sims and Eric Johnson fed Louisville's offense with perimeter shooting in the second half and reserve Damion Dantzler scored key baskets from inside.

Louisville took the lead for good at 74-73 with 8:15 left as Dantzler made a five-foot jumper. The Cardinals then went on a 10-3 run.

But American closed to 87-86 with 2:17 left on two free throws by Oscar Diaz and two 3-pointers by Curbelo.

Louisville played without sophomore center Samaki Walker, suspended due to NCAA violations.

Wheat finished the game with 20 points while Dantzler had a career-high 19 points for the Cardinals.
