CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) _ Bob De Carolis was promoted to athletic director at Oregon State on Wednesday.

De Carolis had been interim director since Mitch Barnhart resigned in July to take the same position at Kentucky.

The 49-year-old De Carolis had been a senior associate athletic director at Oregon State since 1998. De Carolis mainly has been involved with the business side of the department, as well as overseeing plans for the expansion of the school's football stadium.

De Carolis takes over a department that is in much better health than when Barnhart arrived in February 1998. Barnhart hired De Carolis two months later, and they helped shrink the department's debt from $12.5 million to $4.5 million, and he also hired football coach Dennis Erickson, who guided the Beavers to the best season in school history, an 11-1 record in 2000.
