Jun. 15, 1998
TRACY, Calif. (AP) _ Kevin Harvick weaved his way through a wild, final-lap scramble to win the Spears Manufacturing 200 NASCAR Winston West Series race on Sunday at Altamont Raceway Park.
It was the second win of the season for Harvick, putting him back into the lead in the series standings.
Harvick dodged action on the final lap between Sean Woodside, who led 198 of the 200 laps, and Gary Smith, who shadowed the leader throughout the second half of the event. Smith passed Woodside on lap 199, but the two came in contact several times as they raced around the half-mile speedway.
Harvick avoided the spinning cars in turn four. Smith recovered to finish second, with Austin Cameron third and Kelly Tanner fourth. Woodside limped across the finish line in reverse to finish fifth.
The first three drove Chevrolets. Tanner and Woodside were in Pontiacs.
Harvick, who averaged 63.638 mph, collected $12,945 from a purse of $105,539.
