French Train Derailed by Crane
Jul. 30, 2001
PERIGUEUX, France (AP) _ Two passenger trains collided in southwestern France on Monday, after one of the trains derailed when it hit a crane that had fallen onto the tracks from a nearby construction site, police said.
Eleven people were injured in the collision outside Perigueux, 250 miles southwest of Paris. Nine of the injured were being treated at a nearby hospital, police said.
The crane caused an eastbound train traveling from Bordeaux to Lyon to jump the tracks and collide into the second train, passing by on its way south from Limoges to Perigueux. Officials were investigating how the crane fell onto the rails.
