DALLAS — The funeral began Thursday afternoon for a 26-year-old black man killed in his apartment by a white Dallas police officer who said she mistook his residence for her own. Pews were packed at a Dallas-area church for the Botham Jean. SANTA FE, Texas — The attorney for the parents of a teen accused in a Texas school shooting that left 10 people dead and 13 wounded is disputing allegations that they were negligent, saying they did what they could for their son. Attorney Ron Rodgers filed responses Monday to lawsuits against Rose Marie Kosmetatos and Antonios Pagourtzis, The Galveston County Daily News reported. The lawsuits allege they didn't teach their son, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, respect for life and failed to secure their weapons. Dimitrios Pagourtzis has been indicted on capital murder charges in the May 18 shooting at Santa Fe High School. SENT: 300 words.


MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker wants the Legislature to return this month to consider a $100 million tax incentive bill that would keep Texas-based paper products maker Kimberly-Clark from shuttering a plant in the Fox Valley. Without enough Republican support for the package in the state Senate, the bill would need the support of an unknown-number of Democrats to pass. EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University says it's lining up a lawyer for trustee George Perles, who's accused of covering up a rape allegation against Larry Nassar in 1992, when Perles was the athletic director and football coach. TYLER, Texas — In the months after Vennie Jackson retired from a 36-year teaching career, the then-70-year-old realized she had more free time than she'd bargained for. The Tyler Morning Telegraph reports after a period of sitting at home, and often peeking out the window when hearing cars and people pass by, she concluded that she needed to find another way to give back to society. The following year, she found her next venture by becoming a volunteer at UT Health Tyler, formerly East Texas Medical Center. Jackson turned 100 years old on Tuesday.
