Rangers Sign Top Pick Malhotra
Oct. 08, 1998
NEW YORK (AP) _ The New York Rangers have agreed to contract terms with Manny Malhotra, a center who was their first-round pick in the 1998 NHL entry draft.
The Rangers announced the signing in a news release Wednesday night just a couple of hours before a midnight deadline that would have forced the Rangers to return the 18-year-old Malhotra to the junior ranks for the entire 1998-99 season.
No contract terms were announced, but it was believed that Malhotra signed for the $975,000 a year under the rookie salary cap.
In seven preseason games with the Rangers, Malhotra had two assists. In two seasons with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League, Malhotra recorded 32 goals and 63 assists along with 55 penalty minutes in 118 games. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound center also had 14 goals and 13 assists in 30 career playoff outings with the Storm.
