E. Carolina Hires Herrion As Coach
Mar. 30, 1999
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) _ East Carolina hired Bill Herrion, coach at Drexel for eight seasons, as men's basketball coach on Tuesday.
Herrion, 41, succeeds Joe Dooley, who had the final year of his contract bought out after four seasons and a 57-52 record.
``We are extremely excited to have a coach with the credentials of Bill Herrion. His record at Drexel speaks for itself,'' East Carolina athletic director Mike Hamrick said in a statement.
Herrion had a 167-71 career record at Drexel, guiding the Dragons to six 20-win seasons, three regular-season America East Conference titles nd three NCAA tournament appearances.
``Coach Herrion will be remembered as an outstanding coach and someone who represented college basketball and Drexel University with dignity and class,'' Drexel athletics director Eric Zillmer said.
Herrion landed a two-year contract extension from Drexel in 1997 after turning down the coaching job at Rutgers.
He was recommended last season for the vacant job at St. John's by Mike Jarvis, who wound up with the Red Storm job himself. Herrion was Jarvis' assistant at Boston University and at George Washington.
