LISBON, Portugal (AP) — FC Porto needed to be gifted an own goal by Maritimo's goalkeeper for new coach Jose Peseiro to have a winning debut in the Portuguese league on Sunday.
Porto midfielder Andre Andre's long shot hit the crossbar and ricocheted off the back of diving goalie Romain Salin before going into the net for the game's only goal in the 22nd minute.
The win kept Porto within five points of leader Sporting Lisbon and three behind second-place Benfica.
"We wanted to win and we did just that in a game that wasn't easy," said Peseiro, who was hired to replace Spaniard Julen Lopetegui.
Braga routed Rio Ave 5-1, while Guimaraes drew 3-3 at Belenenses.
