Judge refuses to move trial in foster mother killing
Apr. 06, 2018
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — A judge has denied a lawyer's request to move the trial of a Vermont man accused of shooting and killing his foster mother.
Defense attorney Robert Katims had asked for the retrial of 34-year-old Scott Favreau be moved outside of Caledonia County, saying newspaper reports would make it difficult for his client to get a fair trial.
The Caledonian Record reports the judge ruled Wednesday the presence of pretrial publicity was not enough to justify moving the trial.
Favreau has been charged with first degree murder in the 2000 killing of Vicki Campbell-Beer.
A judge threw out his previous second-degree murder conviction in her death in 2017, saying the trial judge never asked Favreau if he admitted to the facts of his guilty plea.
