Ben & Jerry's Hires Headhunter for CEO Search
Aug. 11, 1994
WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) _ Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. has officially expanded its search for a new chief executive beyond its popular essay contest.
The company has hired Russell Reynolds Associates Inc., a New York executive search firm, to help sift through applications and to recruit potential candidates, spokesman Brent Campbell said Wednesday.
Ben & Jerry's is looking for a replacement for company co-founder Ben Cohen, who announced earlier this summer he was stepping aside to concentrate on marketing and other tasks more to his liking.
At the time, the company announced its ''Yo 3/8 I Want to be Your CEO'' contest. Entrants were invited to send in a lid from their favorite flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and 100-word essays about why they should get the job.
More than 20,000 people have responded and the company has said most would get nothing more than ''a rejection letter suitable for framing.''
But it also has said that some of the contest entrants would be given serious consideration for the CEO's job.
Campbell said viable contest entrants were being reviewed by Melanie Kusin, the Russell Reynolds associate handling the Ben & Jerry's search.
The deadline for applications is mid-September and Ben & Jerry's expects to announce a new CEO by the end of the year, Campbell said.
