CUDDEBACKVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Police say searchers have recovered the bodies of a New York City man and his 9-year-old son who were swept down a rain-swollen upstate river over the weekend.
Troopers on Monday identified the victims as 46-year-old Marco Avila and 9-year-old Marcos Avila of Queens. Department of Environmental Conservation rangers and a state police helicopter crew spotted the bodies near Shore Drive along the Neversink River.
Police say the two were last seen Saturday morning at the Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of New York City.
Troopers say the boy was on a raft that overturned and his father dove in to rescue him, but they were swept away by the fast current.
