MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) _ Tyrone Davis scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Kansas State pulled out a hard-fought 63-57 victory over Division II Emporia State on Wednesday.
Davis hit all nine of his shots from the field for the Wildcats (2-0).
Emporia State (1-3), which used a variety of zone defenses to keep the Wildcats off balance, trailed 32-23 at halftime.
The Hornets tied the game with 16:37 left and took the lead a minute later on a 3-point shot by Luther Joiner.
Kansas State made an 11-2 run before the Hornets came back to close the gap to one on a pullup jumper by Chris Henry with 1:20 left. Kansas State hit five of six free throws to hold on.
The Hornets used a variety of zone defenses to hold the much bigger Wildcats to 39 percent shooting, and just 32 percent in the second half.
Mark Young scored 12 points and Aaron Swartzendruber had 10 for the Wildcats
Henry led four Hornets in double figures with 13 points. Rob Layton had 12, Lamont Bunton added 11 and Joyner had 10.
