N.J. Town To Close Bars Earlier
Nov. 05, 1997
WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) _ Drinking `til dawn may be a thing of the past in this shore party town.
By a narrow margin, residents voted Tuesday to force bars to close at 3 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. during the summer.
The vote was 746 to 645.
Supporters campaigned for the earlier closing time saying it would cut down on rowdy behavior in Wildwood.
Critics called the change a knee-jerk reaction to a crime earlier this year, when three men attacked and killed another man outside a bar.
Mayor Fred Wager was among those who opposed the change.
``We'll have to wait and see what happens next summer,'' he said. ``Maybe some changes will have to be made. Maybe we'll have to bring some major entertainment in to these bars to make up for it.''
