NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Vernon Holland, a first-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1971, died Tuesday. He was 49.

Holland died at Columbia-HCA Nashville Memorial Hospital after apparently suffering a heart attack at his home around 6 p.m.

A native of Sherman, Texas, Holland was an all-American at Tennessee State University, where he played from 1967-70, before being the 15th selection in the 1971 NFL draft. He played tackle for the Bengals until 1979.

He was recently working in the security department of the Nashville Arena.
