UK Couple Questioned on Abandoned Baby
Jan. 16, 2002
LONDON (AP) _ A British couple was questioned by police Wednesday after their 3-month-old son was found abandoned in his stroller on a street in Portugal.
No charges were filed against the parents. British police said they were awaiting word from Portuguese authorities about whether that country would request the couple's extradition.
A man walking his dog in Faro, a resort town on Portugal's southern coast, discovered the unattended child on Sunday. The parents had flown home to Britain earlier in the day.
The baby was taken to a hospital, where a nurse recognized him because he had been there for treatment of a cleft palate. The baby was in good health and was being cared for at a local children's home, said Capt. Edmundo Emilio, a police spokesman in Faro.
The mother, Katherine Penny, 23, turned herself in in Britain on Tuesday. She and her boyfriend, Mark Beddoes, 29, were questioned by police in Bournemouth, in southern England. The couple had worked near Faro, selling time-share apartments.
