Second member of Italy's gold-medal speedskating team injured
Jun. 20, 1997
ROME (AP) _ Olympic speedskating medal winner Mirko Vuillermin badly fractured his left leg in a motorcycle accident Friday, less than two weeks after a teammate lost a leg in a similar crash.
Vuillermin, 23, won a silver medal in 5,000-meter short track speedskating at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
He was also a member of the relay team that won gold in 5,000-meter short track speedskating.
ANSA said Vuillermin's motorcycle and a truck crashed in the town of Villair di Quart Friday.
On June 9, teammate Orazio Fagone had his right leg amputated. Like Vuillermin, Fagone was injured in a motorcycle accident in the Aosta region. The May 30 crash badly mangled his leg and gangrene set in.
Short trackers are power racers who display explosive bursts of speed in races often marked by elbowing, pushing and even broken bones.
Short track debuted as an Olympic sport in 1992.
