Teachers will have be given a chance this weekend to model, hula or jump their way toward hundreds of dollars of school supplies.
Arrowhead Mall invites all area teachers to compete for gift cards during its Back to School teacher Challenge, which will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Mall retail coordinator Cristan Robertson said teachers can compete in one to five events — one each hour Saturday afternoon.
"I just know how budget cuts have been — teachers are paying for things out of their own pockets," Robertson said. "This is more about the teachers — we want to help them get money for their classrooms."
The winner of each contest will get an Office Depot gift card for school supplies. At noon, contestants move cotton balls from one bowl to the next for $300.
"We blindfold them as they move the cotton balls — with a spoon," Robertson said.
A Hula Hoop challenge, for $350, will be 1 p.m. A jump rope challenge, for $400, will be 2 p.m., and a trivia challenge, for $450, will be 3 p.m.
"If you miss a question, you spin the wheel to see if you get a pie in the face," Robertson said. "The person whose face stays clean wins."
A Teacher Fashion Show, for $500, will be at 4 p.m.
"The fashion show is based on audience participation," Robertson said, adding that people can use tickets to vote for their favorite teacher model. She said fashions will come from mall stores.
Teachers also can buy a chance for a shopping cart full of school supplies, she said. The mall had sponsored a back-to-school teacher fashion show for four years.
Hilldale fifth-grade reading teacher Heather Keith won last year's fashion show. She said at the time that she would use the money to buy an iXL program for reading and math.
Robertson said 15 to 20 teachers participated in the fashion shows. She said this year's challenge offers nearly three times as much money for school supplies. She said she hopes to draw more male teachers with the different challenges.
Robertson encourages teachers to register early. She said registration is free.
