RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Power outages have hit at least Brazilian five states, including economic powerhouse Sao Paulo and also Rio de Janeiro. Most of the power was restored after about 90 minutes.

The companies AES Eletropaulo and Light provide energy to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states. Both say in statements that they were ordered to make cuts by the government's Electric Energy System Operator, which oversees power generation, transmission and distribution.

The government agency has not explained why it ordered the cuts.

The Globo TV network reported that energy cuts were also seen in four other states and the Federal District.

It's not yet clear how many people were affected.
