TOKYO (AP) _ Tomio Tashiro belted a three-run home run Sunday off former major league pitcher Rich Gale, leading the Yokohama Taiyo Whales to a 5-3 victory over the Hanshin Tigers, the 1985 Japan Series champions.
Gale, who had 13 victories against eight defeats last season, is 0-1.
Former major leaguer Dick Davis drove in two runs with a single in the first inning, leading the Kintetsu Buffaloes to a 3-2 victory over the Nippon Ham Fighters.
KOFU, Japan (AP) - Champion Hilario Zapata of Panama predicted Sunday he would beat Japanese challenger Shuichi Hozumi in their World Boxing Association flyweight title bout.
''I have had enough training,'' Zapata said of Monday night's fight. ''It's up to Hozumi, but I will certainly win either by a knockout or decision,''
The 27-year-old Panamanian is making his second defense of the WBA 112- pound title. He defeated Mexican Javier Lucas in a unanimous decision at Panama City in January.
The champion has a record of 31 victories and five defeats with 11 knockouts. Hozumi, the WBA's No. 7 flyweight contender, has won 28 bouts, eight by knockouts, and lost three.
The 15-round bout will be held at Nirasaki, 74 miles west of Tokyo.
HONG KONG (AP) - Thailand's Srichaphan Tanakorn defeated Zeeshan Ali of India 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 Sunday in the boys' singles final of the Hong Kong Open Junior Tennis Championships.
In the girls' singles final, top seed Paulette Moreno of Hong Kong crushed defending champion Jennifer Saberon of the Philippines 6-1, 6-0.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The New Jersey Devils returned defenseman Don Dietrich to the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League Sunday.
Dietrich originally was recalled by New Jersey March 15 and appeared in 11 games for the Devils, recording two assists.
