PARIS (AP) _ Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe was transferred out of intensive care Friday, five days after being stabbed in the abdomen during an all-night public party at City Hall.
The mayor underwent emergency surgery at Pitie Salpetriere hospital shortly after being attacked during the city's ``Sleepless Night'' festival.
The 52-year-old mayor suffered injuries to the stomach, the intestines and the major vein that brings blood from the lower body to the heart.
Delanoe is expected to be released from the hospital in about five days but won't be back on the job for several weeks.
The suspect in the stabbing, Azedine Berkane, 39, has told investigators he committed the crime out of dislike of homosexuals and politicians, authorities said. Delanoe is openly gay. Berkane has been placed under formal investigation, one step short of being charged.
