BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Darnell Kennedy hit Damon Hodge for a 70-yard touchdown pass to highlight Alabama State's 20-13 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday.
In the second quarter of the 56th annual Magic City Classic, Kennedy connected with Hodge to give the Division I-AA Hornets (2-6) a 14-7 lead they never relinquished against their Division II rivals.
Later in the quarter, A&M quarterback Valeska Johnson hit Miguel Eldridge for a 35-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point failed and the Bulldogs (5-3) never got any closer.
Alex Bartlett kicked a 22-yard field goal for Alabama State to give the Hornets a 17-13 halftime lead.
Bartlett's fourth-quarter field goal of 32 yards was the only score of a rain-soaked second half.
Tyrone Rogers' 62-yard fumble recovery started the scoring for Alabama State early in the second quarter. Archie Turner returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to put Alabama A&M on the board.
Johnson went 7-for-22 for 91 yards and an interception for A&M, while Kennedy completed just 8 of 24 passes for Alabama State.
