WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals have signed the free agent reliever Greg Holland, who they hope can regain his effectiveness and provide leadership in the clubhouse. Holland was 0-2 with a 7.92 ERA in 32 games with St. Louis before being designated for assignment on July 27. After the right-hander worked out with Washington on Monday, the Nationals announced his signing today before facing the Atlanta Braves in a split doubleheader.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is officially out for the season after surgery on his left hip. The Yankees say Ellsbury had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum. The expected recovery time is about six months. The 34-year-old Ellsbury has been out all season with a number of injuries including an oblique strain and sore back. The Yankees placed him on the 60-day disabled list in May.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians went the rock 'n' roll route with a logo for the 2019 All-Star Game that won't offend. Inspired by the city's deep musical roots, the team today unveiled its logo for next year's game — a guitar outlined with red baseball stitches — and no Chief Wahoo. The Indians are hosting the Midsummer Classic for the sixth time, and next year's game coincides with the 25th anniversary of Progressive Field.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The Orlando Magic will play a pair of regular-season games in Mexico City in December. The Magic will host the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 13 then play the Utah Jazz on Dec. 15. It is the third straight year that the Arena Ciudad de Mexico has hosted the NBA. Both games are designated as home games for the Magic. This is Orlando's second visit to Mexico City.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — NBA All-Star and former Wake Forest guard Chris Paul is donating $2.5 million in support of the Demon Deacons' basketball team. The donation announced today is the school's largest by a former Wake Forest basketball player. School officials say it will assist a project to expand and enhance the men's and women's locker rooms, and the men's locker room will be named for him.
