Fla. Crossing Guard Hit by Pickup
Aug. 17, 1999
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) _ A school crossing guard was hit by a pickup truck after pushing two youngsters to safety.
Jill Cook, 66, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition with a broken knee, hip and ribs.
Mrs. Cook pushed 7-year-old Amber Stringer and 10-year-old Tony Stringer out of the way of the pickup Monday near Crystal Lake Elementary.
``How can you possibly thank someone for saving your kids' lives?'' said Christina Stringer, the children's mother. ``Even when Jill was on the ground, all she asked about was if my kids were safe. She is one incredible woman.''
At the school Tuesday, many of the 600 youngsters worked on cards and posters for Mrs. Cook.
Mrs. Cook ``said she was just protecting the lives of children like she was trained to do,'' said a daughter, Joyce Cook.
No immediate charges were filed against the driver.
