Dec. 13, 1989
ARMONK, N.Y. (AP) _ Henry Helmuth Reichhold, founder of Reichhold Chemicals Inc., died Monday at age 88.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
As a laboratory assistant at Ford Motor Co.'s paint department during the 1920s, he started importing a synthetic resin that improved paints' durability and color and reduced drying time from a few days to a few hours.
In 1927, Reichhold left Ford, acquired a factory in Detroit and started producing synthetic resins, forming Reichhold Chemicals Inc. in 1938. The company now has 38 plants nationwide and licensees in two dozen countries.
Reichhold retired as chief executive officer in 1982 and left the company's board of directors in 1985. Reichhold Chemicals was purchased in 1987 by Dainippon and Chemicals Inc., a Japanese company.
