WASHINGTON (AP) _ President-elect Bush's nominee to head the Pentagon, Donald Rumsfeld, is scheduled to hold his first transition meeting with Defense Secretary William Cohen on Friday, a Cohen spokesman said Wednesday.

Spokesman Kenneth Bacon said Cohen, who has known Rumsfeld for many years, had a lengthy telephone conversation with his prospective successor after Bush announced the nomination last week.

If confirmed, Rumsfeld, 68, would hold the unusual distinction of having been defense secretary twice; when he served in the position during the Ford administration he was the youngest person ever to hold the job.
