Sep. 15, 1987
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ A circus elephant squeezed a horse trainer to death after the man climbed inside the animal's enclosure at the Ashton Circus in northern New South Wales, police said today.
The man was the third killed by Abu the elephant in 13 years.
A crowd of adults and children gasped as the 5,500-pound elephant pinned the man to the ground and crushed him Monday night in the town of Gunnedah.
The 51-year-old victim had been drinking before he climbed inside the elephant enclosure, police said. The man's name was withheld.
In 1983 Abu killed a 22-year-old circus clown and in 1974 the elephant trampled a truck driver to death, police said.
Authorities said there were no plans to kill the animal.
