Rock Star Reported in Coma after Overdose
Mar. 04, 1994
ROME (AP) _ Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the rock group Nirvana, was in a coma today following a drug overdose, news reports said.
The public Polyclinic Hospital said that Cobain was treated in its emergency room and transferred to the American Hospital, a private clinic.
Neither hospital would comment on his condition.
ANSA said Cobain, 28, became ill after combining a large dose of the tranquilizer Roipnol with champagne.
State television said doctors at the Polyclinic pumped out his stomach.
Police said he was taken to Polyclinic Hospital around 7 a.m. (1 a.m. EST) and transferred to the clinic about five hours later.
''We are expecting a press statement later in the day,'' said the switchboard operator at the American Hospital.
News reports said Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love, were vacationing in a Rome hotel.
